Don't Ignore How Many Methods Consumers May Use To Find You Or Your Competition!
I am constantly surprised at the stubborn response I get from some small business owners, especially the ones that depend on local business.
They come to me seeking advice and then reject that the Internet has anything to do with how their potential customers may find them. Yet they will admit that the yellow pages (physical book), direct mail, print ads, billboards and other exterior signage aren’t as effective as in the past.
For local business owners, now more than ever before, you need to increase your efforts to be found online. An outdated, simple website is not enough.
You need to put yourself in your prospect’s perspective. They’ll find you how they want to, using whatever method is most convenient or preferred for them, particularly while using their desktop computer, tablet or mobile phone.
What Does It Require?
Either you have to throw serious time or money at it. Do it yourself, delegate it or hire someone. The choice is yours. But you better expect that if you don’t, your competition certainly will.
What Should You Do?
- Beef up your website with a Search Engine Optimization strategy.
- Verify your basic listing on online phone directories is accurate.
- Create social media profiles on Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Linkedin. Then connect to people/customers and promote your special offers. Be willing to engage and interact with these people.
- Create business pages on Facebook, Linkedin and Google+.
- Make sure you have a profile on review sites like Yelp.
- Think about how to give special offers to prospects on social presence sites like Foursquare.
- Add social sharing functionality to your website to let visitors spread the word about what they like. ShareThis or AddToAny are two that are relatively easy to implement.
- Consider a mobile-friendly version of your website for people finding you on the go using their smartphone.
Finally, make sure you have methods to track success:
- Ask your customers
- Look at your web analytics
- Keep track of the referring source your inbound phone sales calls.
Have any additional suggestions? Please leave a comment below.
Thanks.
-Roland

Real Life Series: Pre-Nuptial Seminar – A Business Marriage
When you own and operate a business with one or more people, your relationship is something like a business “marriage.” But like a real marriage, the rosy scenario you hope and plan for at the beginning can sometimes end up in disagreement leading to a desire to end the relationship.
As with a real marriage, a business “marriage” needs to be created with an eye toward how the co-owners can “divorce” if and when it’s decided to end their relationship. Woe to the business owners who fail to plan — who fail to establish the business version of a “prenuptial” agreement.
The three-hour seminar will explain:
- The steps you can take at the start of your business, or even while it is operating, to make a future “divorce” amicable and predictable.
- How the process of separating from your business partner can lead to difficult and
expensive litigation as each owner blames the other for the business problems, for failure
to pull his or her load, or failure to change as necessary with changes in the business.
- How Alternative Dispute Resolution can be used to achieve superior outcomes in a
business divorce.
This is a seminar you and your partner(s) will want to attend!

Today is our company’s official 3 year anniversary. People thought I was crazy to start a new business in fall of 2008. People questioned me, “are you sure you want to do this?”
I have to admit that I didn’t see the economy collapse coming. It was just weeks/months ahead of all the dire, daily news about banks closing, financial institutions floundering, big-3 car companies shuttering dealerships, and people losing their jobs and homes.
Wayback Machine: What Madness Possessed Me?
Master of my domain has a nice ring to it. But realistically, I could no longer allow my professional fate to be in the hands of others. I wanted control over my career, who and what I worked for. So I spent a year planning my business venture, as well as how I’d exit from the corporate world. Finally I put the official stake in the ground on September 13, 2008.
Five Months Of Nothing
I hit the ground running. Joined the local chamber of commerce. Attending several business networking events a week. Met people. Shook hands. Swapped business cards and “Elevator Pitches.” Submitted proposals. Lot’s of proposals. Unfortunately everyone was scared. No money was exchanging hands. There were many sleepless nights without job security. So I kept at it, every day.
The Tipping Point
By February 2009, things began to brighten. A few proposals were awarded. Money started coming in. Projects were completed. Soon after client referrals began to roll in.
Now it’s Sept 2011. I’m still here. Last I counted, we completed projects for 70 clients. We’re adding new clients regularly. Spreading the love to some trusted collaborators to help get the work done and make my clients happy. Trying to figure out the next steps to grow.
Has It Been Easy?
Not at all. I knew a lot before becoming a small business owner, and have learned a ton more since as Chief Executive Everything. Through all the stress and anxiety, I am happier now working seven days a week for myself.
Most importantly:
- Lights are on
- Bills are paid
- Kids are fed/clothed/sheltered
- And I believe we’ve helped quite a few small business owners along the way directly, or via the NJ Small Business Development Center.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our success. I’m looking forward to the chapters ahead.
-Roland
